Why is this shake great for digestive health?

Yogurt contains live active cultures AKA probiotics. These microorganisms help aid in digestion and offer a variety of other health benefits. An important ingredient is the apple cider vinegar, which is fermented apple juice containing natural probiotics. In addition to this, there is evidence based support that apple cider vinegar helps stabilize blood sugar. This is especially helpful for type 2 diabetics trying to keep their blood glucose within normal limits.

The fresh fruit and organic dates are prebiotics. These contain non-digestible fibers that feed the gastrointestinal microbiome that reside in our gut! When probiotics and prebiotics combine, they work synergistically. These “good bacterium” are being studied for their effectiveness and safety in many diseases such as IBS, IBD (Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s), neutropenia, cancer, and heart disease.

Berry Effervescent Smoothie Recipe

Yields: 1 serving


  • 3/4 cup Plain Greek non-fat yogurt (I like Chobani-but you can choose any yogurt that contains S. Thermophilus, L. Bulgaricus, L. Acidophilus, Bifidus & L. Casei)
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1/2 cup organic strawberries
  • 1 tbsp organic apple cider vinegar (*This product naturally contains probiotics-see additional benefits below)
  • 1 tsp chia seeds
  • 1 cup nut milk, coconut milk or purified water
  • 2-3 large ice cubes


  1. Mix all ingredients except the dates. Add additional liquid as needed for the perfect consistency.
  2. Chop dates and add last for a sweet chewy topping
